Boti Falls

During the first week in October, Elder and Sister Fitzgerald (executive secretary to the area presidency) invited us to go to Koforidua, about a 90-minute drive north of Accra, to visit the senior missionaries who serve in that district. We were delighted to see a new part of Ghana and spend a few hours with Elder and Sister Scoville. They happily welcome visitors because they don't get to Accra very often. After picking them up at their house, we drove 17 kilometers to a beautiful forest reserve to see Boti Falls and Umbrella Rock, two favorite destinations in that area.

  

This is an overlook near Boti Falls (behind us). The 
river Pawnpawn flows down from the mountains
 until it turns into waterfalls in the heart of the forest.

The Scovilles and Fitzgeralds, standing at the top
of 250 stone steps that take you to the bottom 
of the 30-meter-high falls and a large pool. 

  

The steep path leading to the base of the falls is 
surrounded by lush green trees and vines. A variety 
of colorful butterflies welcome hikers along the way. 

There are actually two waterfalls. The time of year
determines the size of the falls. During the rainy season
 they join together to become one enormous cascade.

  

On our way to the next stop, the Scovilles took us on 
a road that boasts a spectacular view of the region's
 beautiful rolling hills and fertile green valleys.

As we hiked up to Umbrella Rock, it soon became
obvious to the women that we would be taking the 
pictures and the men would be doing the climbing.

  

I really did want to get over there, but my knees felt
like rubber the entire time we watched our husbands
enjoying the unforgettable view from Umbrella Rock.

Here is why I didn't venture any further! Those
bamboo ladders weren't my idea of a fun time. But
we did have a wonderful day with the Scovilles.
